A systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials investigating the impact of co-administration of curcumin and piperine on inflammation and oxidative stress

Abstract:   (268 Views)
Introduction: Over the past few decades, curcumin has been recognized for its beneficial effects on various chronic disorders. However, its therapeutic effectiveness is limited due to low bioavailability. Piperine has been investigated as a potential compound to enhance the bioavailability of curcumin in scientific studies. This review aimed to examine the impact of combined curcumin and piperine intake on oxidative stress and inflammatory markers in randomized clinical trials (RCTs).
Search Method: A thorough search was conducted using relevant keywords in databases such as Cochrane Library, Scopus, PubMed, and Web of Science, covering the period from January 1, 1970, to September 30, 2022. The focus was on identifying RCTs. Continuous data from the selected studies were analyzed using the standard mean difference (SMD) and a 95% confidence interval. The Comprehensive Meta-Analysis (CMA) software was employed for all statistical analyses.
Results: The findings of the meta-analysis revealed that the administration of curcumin combined with piperine significantly increased the activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and the levels of reduced glutathione (GSH), while it significantly decreased malondialdehyde (MDA) concentrations. Furthermore, the study showed that curcumin plus piperine led to a significant reduction in the levels of tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) and interleukin-6 (IL-6).
Conclusion: Based on these results, it can be concluded that the administration of curcumin along with piperine effectively reduces oxidative stress and inflammation.
