Introduction: The usage of AnbarNesa smoke in treating different diseases, especially dermatologic ulcers, and mucosal inflammations, has long been considered by Avicenna in Iranian traditional medicine. In our previous study, we prepared a patented preparation of this remedy and named it ANNAS. In this study, we investigated its effects on gastrointestinal inflammatory cells. Methods and Materials: The ANNAS drug was made by dissolving the smoke in propylene glycol in a weight/volume manner. Then cytotoxic or proliferative effects of ANNAS were investigated at different dilutions on the HT-29 human colon adenocarcinoma Tumor cell line by MTT2 assay in cell culture. The inflammatory responses were induced by LPS (Lipo Poly Saccharide). Results: The MTT assay showed the cytotoxic effect of ANNAS in high concentrations and a significant anti-inflammatory and proliferative effect in low concentrations on both the differentiated and LPS-treated HT-29 cell lines. Conclusions: Diluted ANNAS has significant regulatory effects on inflammatory responses, possibly due to the presence of a series of plants consumed by the animal in springtime, or due to the enteral microbial metabolites or hormonal changes during pregnancy and lactation. These results suggest that ANNAS may be beneficial in treating inflammatory pathological injuries, such as inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD).
