Introductions: Obesity is a metabolic disorder strongly associated with chronic medical problems that lead to poor health. While some studies suggest that incorporating yoga into a weight-loss program may be beneficial for treating obesity or being overweight, there are only a few studies that focus specifically on overweight women and examine health markers as the primary outcome, regardless of weight loss. The present study aimed to assess the effect of cyclic yoga on general health among overweight women. Methodsand Materials: In this quasi-experimental study, 42 overweight women (40-60 years, BMI≥25) were equally and randomly divided into the intervention or control groups. A yoga intervention was conducted three times a week for three months. To measure the effects on mental health, the 28-item General Health Questionnaire (GHQ-28) was used to assess participants before and after the intervention. The ethical committee of Kermanshah University of Medical Sciences approved this study. Results: The results showed that the intervention group who practiced cyclic yoga had significant improvements in their anxiety, sleep disorder, social function, and general health dimensions of GHQ-28 in the post-test (p≤0.05). However, no significant improvement was observed in the Somatic symptoms and Depression symptoms variables (p>0.05). Additionally, there was a significant difference (p≤0.05) in the mean general health level scores before and after intervention between the two groups. Conclusions: These findings support cyclic yoga as a potential strategy for improving overweight women’s general health, physical and mental status, and social function. Therefore, regular cyclic yoga is one of the critical factors influencing general health among overweight women.
