Abstract:   (215 Views)
Introduction: Telomeres are DNA-protein complexes composed of deoxyribonucleic acid repeats and are located at the termini of linear chromosomes. It protects the genes from damage and is thus important for chromosomal stability and cellular integrity. Telomeres have been suggested to play an important role in the development and prognosis of cardiovascular diseases. This study aimed to evaluate systolic (SBP) and diastolic (DBP) blood pressures in adults with different telomere lengths.
Methods and Materials: The study was performed on 119 healthy volunteers (28-74 years) from Rabat city (a city in West Azerbaijan province, Iran). A blood sample was prepared from all participants. The leukocyte telomere length of each individual was relatively measured by real-time PCR. Participants were divided into three groups based on the telomere length, i.e. short (TL≤0.8), intermediate (0.81.8), and long (TL≥1.8). The SBP and DBP were measured for each participant. The statistical analysis was done after adjusting telomere length with age.
Results: The measured SBP was higher in participants with short telomere (124.4±21.2) than in ones with intermediate (113.5±14.8) or long telomere length (112.8±16.9) (P<0.001). The measured DBP was also higher in participants with short telomere (84.0±11.8) than in ones with intermediate (75.3±9.6) or long telomere length (75.4±10.7) (P<0.001).
Conclusion: There are reverse relationships between telomere length and systolic/diastolic pressures that may be evidence for an increase in cardiovascular diseases concomitant with telomere attrition.
